Passage 2
The key to any successful garage sale(家庭旧物出售) is to get the word out . The best means of advertising your sale is to place an ad in the local newspaper. If you have a city paper, make sure you advertise in it. The ad should be large enough that it stands out. It should also include information on where the sale is located with directions, the“hot”items you're selling and the time the sale will start and end.An ad should be placed at least two days before the sale and run until the day of your event. That way people can plan their route(路线) to the sale in advance.
Signs are another great way to inform your community. Post them in places where people gather, such as stores and community centers . Some businesses have a central bulletin board(布告栏),which is the best place to advertise. Other places to post are at the local college or university campus. This is especially helpful if your sale is happening in August or early September when students have returned to school and are looking for cheap finds. Post signs around your neighborhood. You should also place both ads and direction signs, especially if you're located on a side street without a major presence.Signs will attract and direct people. Just make sure you print in bold letters and use large direction signs so people can read the information from the front seat of their car.

Passage 3
Advertisement can be thought of as“the means of making known in order to buy or sell goods or services.” Advertisement aims to increase people's awareness and arouse interest. It tries to inform and to persuade. The media are all used to spread the message. The press offers a fairly cheap method, and magazines are used to reach special sections of the market. The cinema and commercial radio are useful for local market. Television, although more expensive, can be very effective.Public notices are fairly cheap and more permanent in their power of attraction. Other ways of increasing consumer interest are through exhibitions and trade fairs as well as direct mail advertisement. There can be no doubt that the growth in advertisement is one of the most striking features of the western world in this century. Many businesses such as those handling frozen foods, liquor, tobacco and medicines have been built up largely by advertisement.
We might ask whether the cost of advertisement is paid for by the producer or by the customer.Since advertisement forms part of the cost of production, which has to be covered by the selling price, it is clear that it is the customer who pays for the advertisement. However, if large-scale advertisement leads to increased demand, production costs are reduced, and the customer pays less.
It is difficult to measure exactly the influence of advertisement on sales. When the market is growing, advertisement helps to increase demand. When the market is shrinking, advertisement may prevent a bigger fall in sales than would occur without its support. What is clear is that businesses would not pay large sums for advertisement if they were not convinced of its value to them.

A. businesses usually do not pay much for advertisement

Passage 4

A person only needs to hear the noise for a little more than one second to be affected.
An American scientist has found that using aspirin(阿斯匹林) can increase the temporary(暂时的)hearing loss or damage from loud noise. He did an experiment, using a number of male students at a university who all had normal hearing. He gave them different amounts of aspirin for different periods of time, and then he tested their hearing ability. He found that the students who were given four grams of aspirin a day for two days suffered much greater temporary hearing loss than those who did not use aspirin. The hearing loss was about two times as great. The scientist said millions of people in the United States use much larger amounts of aspirin than were used in the study.
